NGEA™ Student News – January 2020

Register for the Challenge!

The Frank Arnott - Next Generation Explorers Award (NGEA™) is open to students who are currently enrolled in either an undergraduate earth science degree or post-graduate research at the time of registering for the challenge.
Although the core of the team will be geoscientists (i.e., geophysicists, geologists, geochemists, etc.), teams are encouraged to be multi-disciplinary and include members from other fields of study (i.e., engineers, data scientists, economists, social scientists, etc.).

Rio Tinto welcomed as a Gold Sponsor

The Frank Arnott-Next Generation Explorers Award (NGEA™) Committee is delighted to announce Rio Tinto will be a Gold Sponsor for the inaugural Frank Arnott - Next Generation Explorers Award (NGEA™).

Rio Tinto head of Exploration, Dave Andrews, said: “Rio Tinto is proud to sponsor the Frank Arnott - Next Generation Explorers Award and support explorers of tomorrow gain the necessary skills to unlock the future minerals and materials essential to human progress.

“The award pays homage to Frank Arnott, a true pioneer and an extraordinary geophysicist who worked in our business and revolutionized how we work today, taking inspiration from media software and applying it to the way we now integrate and visualize data to identify our new growth discoveries. It is wonderful to see Frank’s legacy live on through this award.”

Need a Mentor?

Mentoring is a highly rewarding process and an important part of the NGEA™. Mentors will provide participants with encouragement, guidance, perspective, access to industry experts and opportunities to review the team’s progress and outcomes.

Mentors can advise on how to select and run a project; however, they cannot participate in the actual work being performed by your team. Mentors are there to support you and can participate in regular meetings with teams during the research period to ensure achievable goals are being set within the available time. At a minimum, mentors are to provide students with general guidance and assist with team building, project selection, networking and collaboration.

If your team requires a mentor, please contact us at [email protected].

Promoting Your Participation

As being social is part of the challenge, we will actively promote your team’s participation in the NGEA™. Remember to send us a digital photo of your group along with a team name and the names of each of your members. We will post your photo on our website, share it with our sponsors and promote your team on our various social media channels. This is a great opportunity for promoting your team and university.
