The Global Resource Race

PDAC President Karen Rees shares insights with Washington Post partner Investment Reports

In an interview with Investment Reports, PDAC President Karen Rees reflected on her 37-year career in mineral exploration, her path to leadership within PDAC, and her vision for fostering an inclusive and skilled workforce while championing the next generation of geoscientists. She discussed Canada’s advantages in the global race for critical minerals, from its vast geology and strong financial sector to a mature regulatory framework, while also underscoring the need for more efficient permitting. Rees highlighted PDAC’s recommendations to government on reducing trade barriers and red tape and emphasized that efficiency must not come at the expense of environmental or community commitments. Looking ahead to her first convention as president in 2026, she pointed to PDAC’s role as a global hub for mineral exploration and mining, and outlined priorities that include supporting grassroots explorers, strengthening fiscal incentives such as the METC, and expanding outreach to share the industry’s positive stories and its essential role in building a sustainable future.

The interview is part of the upcoming Global Resource Race Report, which will be published by the Washington Post in November, 2025.
