The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is one of the earliest and most comprehensive international instruments on Indigenous rights. For the mineral exploration and mining sector—a global industry spanning more than 160 countries—UNDRIP is just the beginning. Around the world, a range of best practices and techniques are applied to meet the legal requirements and expectations of affected Indigenous communities. This session will explore the regulatory and legal complexities of Indigenous rights, UNDRIP, and FPIC in an international context, offering unique perspectives and experiences of Indigenous groups engaging with the mineral sector in some of the industry’s most prolific jurisdictions.
