Charles brings nearly 30 years of experience in the metals and mining industry, with deep expertise in mineral economics, sustainability, mine finance, and data-driven business ventures. His career spans research on mine-smelter-refinery economics, commodity market analysis, and technical and financial due diligence.
He began his career in copper and gold at Brook Hunt (later acquired by Wood Mackenzie) before moving into sell-side research roles at several investment banks. Charles then led mine economics teams and developed market intelligence products at SNL Metals & Mining (now part of S&P Global Market Intelligence) and Metals Focus. He also founded and managed a gold acquisition company focused on operating assets in Africa.
In 2016, Charles co-founded Skarn Associates, where he pioneered methodologies to quantify GHG emissions, energy consumption, and water usage in mining. Most recently, he established his own consultancy, advising on strategic and technical issues across copper, PGMs, manganese, and ferroalloys. Throughout his career, Charles has advised a diverse range of clients, continuously expanding his industry knowledge and network. His unique blend of expertise now strengthens Wood Mackenzie’s Copper Research division.
