Heidi Gravelle

Chief, Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi’it First Nation
Grasmere, Canada

Heidi Gravelle, Nasuʔkin (Chief) of Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡi‘it First Nation. One of the 6 Ktunaxa First Nation Governments is a respected leader advancing responsible development and reconciliation through principled, pragmatic collaboration and free prior and informed consent. Her leadership focuses on ensuring Indigenous governance is embedded in Canada’s regulatory frameworks to ensure that major projects are built in ways that honour the land, protect ecosystems, and uphold the responsibilities owed to future generations. Guided by Ktunaxa laws and values, Chief Gravelle advocates for development approaches that move beyond consultation toward genuine partnership and shared decision-making. She has been instrumental in shaping frameworks that integrate Indigenous knowledge, environmental stewardship, and cultural responsibility into project planning, assessment, and long-term monitoring. Chief Gravelle’s approach is rooted in the belief that reconciliation must be lived through action—through how decisions are made, how responsibilities are shared, and how outcomes support both communities and the environment. Working with governments, industry, and other Nations, she continues to advance co-management, enhance regulatory accountability, and foster trust in how projects proceed across jurisdictions. This cannot be achieved without First Nations leading with integrity and ensuring that it is consent based. Known for her clarity, integrity, and results-driven leadership, Chief Gravelle demonstrates that reconciliation and responsible resource development are not competing objectives—they are the foundation for Canada’s sustainable and inclusive future. Her vision is one where major projects succeed not only because they meet regulatory standards, but because they embody respect, reciprocity, and shared responsibility to the lands and waters and all living things.
