Exploration geochemical data has directly led to the discovery of many mineral deposits. However, mineral exploration is becoming more challenging in mature mining districts as the amount of barren cover in prospective terranes increases. This short course is designed to introduce basic concepts related to the interpretation of exploration geochemical data through relevant examples for a variety of commodities. Examples used range from surficial surveys through to lithogeochemistry. Participants will learn how to undertake exploratory data analysis (EDA) of simple data sets using individual or a small number of elements before advancing to multivariate data. The use of ioGAS interpretative software will be introduced to allow participants to interpret open-file data sets.

Top takeaways:

  • An understanding of exploratory data analysis as applied to exploration geochemical data
  • Recognize common issues associated with geochemical data
  • Learn how to add value to existing datasets through simple treatments of historical data
  • Understand some of the concepts related to machine learning, as well as some of the limitations
  • Be able to interpret simple data sets using ioGAS by the end of the day

Laptop required for course exercises.
