What is a mining project worth? How do you ascribe a value to an exploration, development or production project? Project Valuations are increasingly required in mining capital markets transactions. A mining valuation may be required for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) transactions, initial public offerings, the purchase of a mining project, the transfer of a state-owned mining asset, private entity transactions, government expropriation, stock market transactions (IPO's), fairness opinions, taxation purposes, court litigation, accounting purposes, among other things. There have been a myriad of valuation methods and techniques utilized within the mining sector and the capital markets when ascribing a value to exploration, development and production projects, some of which are not credible. There is consensus internationally among the leading mining finance countries (Australia, Canada (CIMVAL-The Canadian Mining Valuation Standards), South Africa, the USA and the UK) on which approaches and methods are acceptable for putting a price on a mining project (IMVAL- The international Valuation Standards). The session will examine the fundamentals of mining valuation as well as techniques and new developments in valuation standards and methods. Topics covered include exploration projects, PEAs, political risks, choosing discount rates, real options, AI usage and development projects.
