Dr Matthias Haeckel is a senior scientist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Institute of Ocean Research Kiel, Germany.
His research interest is focused on a quantitative understanding of marine biogeochemical processes and how they are altered by anthropogenic activities. He has worked on cold vents & gas hydrates, sub-seafloor CO2 storage, impacts from deep-sea mining for 29 years. Since 2015 he is the coordinator of the European JPI Oceans Project 'MiningImpact’ with 30+ partner institutions, which investigates the environmental impacts and risks of deep-sea mining and provides independent scientific advice to the International Seabed Authority.
