Over the past 18 months, Global Indigenous Development Trust (GIDT) has worked in partnership with Tahltan Nation Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and more than 18 collaborating organizations to co-develop and pilot a new Indigenous-led approach to mineral exploration. This model thoughtfully braids Ancestral Knowledge and relational economics with Western science and technology to restore and strengthen critical relationships between the land, Indigenous communities, and mining done right. The resulting framework provides a practical and adaptable guide for First Nations seeking to define resource governance on their own terms, and for mining companies committed to working in alignment with Indigenous values and responsibilities. At its core, the approach re-imagines mining through an Indigenous lens — one that honours Earth Mother, prioritizes reciprocity and respect, and advances sustainable practices rooted in thousands of years of ancestral stewardship.
