Matt Breen

Matt Breen Matt is the Chief Operating Officer at Rio Tinto’s Diavik Diamond Mine. He was appointed as COO in 2023 after joining the operation as General Manager of Operations in 2022. Matt comes from the mining town of Mount Isa in Australia where he was born and raised in the shadow of the Mount Isa Mines. He received his diploma in Mining and Mineral Engineering as well as his Master of Mining Engineering from Federation University Australia. He has been around the mining industry his entire life, and his work has taken him to several sites around the world. He spent four years at Rio Tinto’s Oyu Tolgoi project in Mongolia before most recently overseeing the restart of a gold mine in New South Wales, Australia before joining Diavik. While Matt has experience in open cut mining, he has spent the majority of his time in underground operations, engineering, and project roles.
