This session will examine practical approaches to stakeholder engagement in the context of human rights due diligence. The discussion will focus on how companies in the extractive sector can identify and engage internal and external stakeholders as part of assessing, managing, and remediating human rights risks. The session will explore alignment with international human rights norms and standards, relevant legislative requirements, and stakeholder expectations. Specific attention will be given to common salient human rights issues in the sector, including labour-related risks such as forced labour and child labour, with consideration of stakeholders across both operations and supply chains. Discussion will address engagement with typical stakeholder groups mining companies may engage with, such as Indigenous Peoples and other community members but will also consider other stakeholder groups that might be impacted by the full range of salient issues relevant to mining such as migrant workers, younger workers and stakeholders in the downstream value chain.
