Aurora Maria Hernandez, M.Sc., A & M.A.
Aurora's strong inclination toward the sciences led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in mining engineering. After gaining experience in the industry, her focus shifted to environmental protection and restoration, prompting her to obtain a master’s degree in applied science with a specialization in Mine Restoration Research. Growing up as a visible minority in a single-parent immigrant household deepened her understanding of effective cross-cultural communication and the social support necessary for success in diverse settings. Consequently, she pursued a master’s degree in arts in Cross-Cultural Studies.
Aurora leverages her engineering and communication skills to support Cree Nation government initiatives aimed at fostering community-driven projects. One such initiative involves the remediation of abandoned exploration sites, embracing sustainability principles that promote a balanced ecology for the long-term health of the land while emphasizing collaboration with tallymen and land users and preserving Cree knowledge transfer and stewardship practices.
She serves on committees established through agreements, ensuring that community concerns regarding environmental and social aspects are integrated into the implementation of monitoring initiatives. Over the years, Aurora has cultivated strong relationships with senior officials in the Cree Nation, industry representatives, and provincial and federal agencies.
Aurora has dedicated over 15 years to assisting the Cree Nation Government in managing the environmental and social impacts of mining operations in Eeyou-Istchee/James Bay, Northern Quebec. Her ability to integrate technical knowledge with cultural sensitivity positions her as a strategic asset to the Cree Nation. Her commitment to sustainable development encompasses both environmental and social responsibilities, prioritizing the well-being of impacted communities.
