Derek Epp

Chief, Tzeachten First Nation
Chilliwack, Canada

Derek Epp is a nationally respected Indigenous leader and economic strategist, currently serving as Chief of Tzeachten First Nation. With over a decade of experience in governance, finance, and infrastructure development, Derek has positioned Tzeachten as a model of economic self-sufficiency and strategic growth. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing land acquisition, taxation jurisdiction, and capital access for Indigenous communities across Canada. As Chief, Derek successfully led the Additions to Reserve (ATR) process, securing new lands for Tzeachten in record time while actively working to modernize colonial policy frameworks. He chairs the First Nations Finance Authority, where he has helped grow the organization’s loan portfolio beyond $3 billion — unlocking capital for infrastructure, housing, and economic development projects nationwide. He also co-chairs the Strategic Initiative Board of the First Nations Tax Commission, advocating for expanded fiscal powers and sustainable revenue models for First Nations governments. Derek’s governance expertise is backed by active roles in national institutions including the First Nations Lands Advisory Board, Financial Management Board, and Infrastructure Institution. His credentials include certifications from the Aboriginal Finance Officers Association, UBC Sauder School of Business, and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. His contributions have earned him international, national, and local recognition — including the Freedom of the City of London, King Charles III’s Coronation Medal, and the Excellence in Community Service Award from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Derek brings a solution-oriented mindset, deep financial literacy, and a collaborative approach to every table he joins — whether negotiating with governments, guiding investment strategy, or building long-term economic plans for Indigenous communities.
